Theo Bennett

Hey, I'm Theo Bennett

Software engineer, remote worker, and gamer who has spent the last 10 years searching for the perfect ergonomic chair. Spoiler: it doesn't exist. But I've gotten pretty close.

My Story

I've been working from home for over a decade now. Between writing code all day, gaming for hours, and the general reality of sitting at a desk 10+ hours daily, I've put my body through a lot. And let me tell you—cheap chairs will destroy your back.

After years of back pain, I started obsessively researching ergonomic chairs. I've personally owned and tested dozens of them—from the hyped-up gaming chairs to the premium Herman Millers and everything in between. I've spent thousands of dollars (probably too much) trying to find that "perfect" chair.

Here's what I learned: the perfect chair doesn't exist. Every chair has trade-offs. The Embody has weak lumbar. The Fern has a weird seat depth issue. The Aeron's sizing is a nightmare. But some chairs get a lot closer to perfect than others—and that's what this site is about.

I built SeatLab HQ to share everything I've learned from years of real-world testing. Not quick hands-on reviews at trade shows. Not sponsored content from brands. Just honest, long-term ownership experience from someone who actually sits in these chairs 8+ hours a day.

Why Trust My Reviews?

10+ Years Remote Work

I actually sit in these chairs all day, every day

Long-Term Ownership

I own and test chairs for years, not days

Developer + Gamer

Extended sessions mean I feel every flaw

No Sponsored Rankings

Brands don't pay to be #1 on my list

Real Money Spent

I buy most chairs myself, no "review units"

6'2" Perspective

Tall user insights that most reviewers miss

My 11-Point Scoring System

After testing so many chairs, I developed a scoring system based on what actually matters for all-day comfort. Each chair gets rated 0-5 on these criteria:

1Price Rating
2Seat Depth Adjustability
3Height Range
4Lumbar Comfort
5Armrests
6Upper Back Support
7Neck Support
8Breathability
9Material Quality
10Softness
11Warranty

Maximum score: 55 points. No chair has ever scored a perfect 55—because the perfect chair doesn't exist (yet).

How I Score Chairs I Haven't Sat In

Let's be real: there are hundreds of office chairs on the market, and it's physically impossible for one person to buy and test every single one. I've personally owned and tested about a dozen chairs over the years—but my database includes many more.

For chairs I haven't personally tested, I built a rigorous research system that aggregates data from multiple trusted sources:

  • Professional reviews from Wirecutter, RTINGS, Office Chair Picks, BTod, and Crandall Office
  • User reviews from Amazon, Reddit communities (r/officechairs, r/homeoffice), and forums
  • Manufacturer specifications and warranty information
  • Video teardowns and long-term ownership reviews
  • Real user feedback patterns across thousands of reviews

Every chair on this site is clearly labeled so you know exactly what you're getting:

✓ Hands-On Tested= I've personally owned or extensively tested this chair
Research-Based= Scores derived from aggregated professional and user data

When I eventually get hands-on time with a research-based chair, I update the scores to reflect my real-world experience. The goal is to give you useful information now while being completely honest about how I got it.

How This Site Makes Money (Full Transparency)

I use affiliate links. When you buy a chair through my links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This helps me keep buying and testing new chairs without going completely broke.

But here's what I refuse to do:

  • Accept payment to change rankings
  • Hide problems I find with chairs
  • Rank chairs by commission rates
  • Publish fake "sponsored reviews"
  • Let brands edit my content

The Embody is my #1 chair right now. Herman Miller doesn't pay me to say that—I just genuinely think it's the best overall option for most people, despite its flaws.

Chairs I've Owned & Tested

Over the years, I've put my money where my mouth is. These are chairs I've actually purchased and lived with—not just sat in at a showroom for 10 minutes:

Yes, I've spent way too much money on chairs. But at least now you don't have to.
